Bangladesh: leather industry ahead of schedule on export target

Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau has reported that shipments of leather and leather products in the first seven months of the current financial year (July 2016 to January 2017) grew by 12.2% year on year to reach $743.8 million.

The breakdown shows that export earnings from leather footwear increased by 13% to $335.8 million, while shipments of leathergoods fetched $243.2 million, meaning growth of 19.2 growth year on year for the July-January period.

Exports of finished leather grew too, by 1.7%, to reach $164.7 million.

Bangladesh has set an export target for the leather sector of $1.2 billion for the current financial year (July 2016 to June 2017). These most recent figures indicate that the leather industry in Bangladesh is ahead of schedule in meeting this target.
