New Nanopress embossing machine promises natural look

Founder and president of Ansan-based Nanopress, Young Sung Kang, has told leatherbiz that his company’s patented Multiflex machine offers tanners a combination of ironing and ‘nano-sanding’ functionality. Benefits include a smooth touch after processing, a uniform effect on the hide (even at low temperature or low pressure), a natural gloss effect without what Mr Young calls “diffused shininess”, and a natural grain look (even on lambskin and other soft leathers).
Speaking at Tanning Tech 2017 in Milan, Mr Young said a new “hinge system of hydraulic cylinders” is the key to the way the technology works. In the embossing process, the working roller, which Nanopress can customised to suit customers’ design needs, is pressed by three pressure rollers (two big, one small), which apply pressure gently thanks to a combination of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. This set-up allows for longer contact between the hide and the working roller.
“We make the rollers,” Mr Young explained, “but we copy the look of natural hides. The hair cells on a hide are not uniform because the hairs are angled to help make sure rain runs off the cow’s skin. When you look at traditionally embossed hides under a linen-tester, they nearly always have a false uniformity. The Nanopress one is more natural and that’s what tanners want, the most natural look possible.”
