Sharp fall for Colombia’s leather sector in 2016

Colombia’s manufacturing output increased in value in 2016 by 3.5% but most of the growth came from the oil sector, which registered an increase in value of almost 20%.

The sector with the steepest decline year on year was leather. Output from Colombia’s leather sector fell in value by 18.1% in 2016.

Footwear’s figures were better, growth of 3.6%, but industry commentators have pointed out that this performance owes much to new government programmes to source shoes and boots from Colombian manufacturers.
