Vyazemsky Kozhevenny, a tanning group based in the Smolensk region of Russia, has opened a new facility in an attempt to boost production for domestic and export markets, according to local media reports.

The company already exports leather to the US, Italy and India. This accounts for 40% of its current output. The new factory will allow it to increase its export potential.

Teymuraz Barkalaya, general director of the plant, told Russian media that the company also hopes to capture 11% of the domestic market for raw and crust leather by 2019. This would see it take business away from foreign suppliers, which currently control 22% of the Russian market.

A total of €6 million has been invested in the project. This included the purchase of industrial machinery from Italy.
