Indonesian court halts imports of buffalo meat from India

A court decision in Indonesia will bring to an end the practice introduced last year of importing buffalo meat from India to help keep local beef prices competitive.

Local livestock companies in Indonesia petitioned the court to halt the shipments because of the effect on their sales of the presence of cheaper Indian buffalo meat in local markets.

The court rejected this but declared that imports of meat from countries without an official status of being free from foot and mouth disease (which includes India) can only be permitted in “emergency situations”, such as natural disasters that affect supplies of locally produced meat. Because the measures introduced last year were merely for economic reasons, the court said importers were no longer permitted to bring the buffalo in.
