New Istanbul fair disappoints

A new exhibition, Alleather-IDF, went ahead at the start of February as planned in the CNR Expo Center in Istanbul.

Formal visitor and exhibitor numbers have not been published yet, but early reaction from leather industry observers in Turkey suggest the first edition of the event was less successful than the organisers were hoping for.

They said the space the exhibitors’ stands took up was considerably less than communications from the organisers had suggested, with around 30 leather garment producers and a small number of leather chemicals suppliers taking part. A further 20 stands were occupied by trade organisations, schools and media.

Consensus was that the poorer than expected performance of the event could be down to shrinking activity in the Turkish tanning sector, the timing (which clashed with other events that are better established on the international calendar), insufficient promotion and the high cost of taking a stand.
