Leather Pipeline says 2017 prospects would be good if it weren’t for politics
Our exclusive Leather Pipeline market intelligence report has said that the outlook for the global leather industry in 2017 would be positive if it weren’t for the unsettled political situation that dominates the news at the moment.

In the latest issue of Leatherbiz Weekly, the report says all the fundamentals of the leather market appear strong. Cars, luxury leathergoods and high-end furniture are still selling well and tanners that serve those industries are busy.

There is even talk of some big-name brands in the mass-market segment taking a shine to leather again, which would give a great boost to demand. “The first signs [of this] can already be seen, with more suede split and goat being consumed,” the report says.

However, it goes on to say that leather would perhaps be even more attractive to these buyers if the industry itself were to stand up properly to defend leather. “The leather industry continues on the defensive, just taking shelter when campaigns against it are run,” the report continues. “It should be more positive and self-confident: there is nothing to hide and nothing to be ashamed of. The industry is using a by-product, turning it into a valuable material. People can decide for themselves if they want to eat meat or not, but as long as the by-product is available it is definitely much better to use it than to cast it aside.”
