Government takes action over anthrax outbreak in Indonesia

Indonesia’s agriculture minister, Amran Sulaiman, has insisted the country’s central government has taken prompt action to respond to an outbreak of anthrax in Yogyakarta. Anthrax is being blamed for the death of a child there in early January.

Mr Amran said a government team was on the ground in Yogyakarta to prevent the spread of anthrax and he said consumers much make sure to cook beef at high temperatures.

Yogyakarta is an important centre of leather production. The tanning process usually leaves hides and skins free from risk of anthrax.
