Xeros is going ahead without Lanxess for now

Specialist polymer bead technology provider Xeros is close to agreeing a ten-year deal for Austrian tanner Wollsdorf to become the first to use its innovation in the tanning industry, but it is carrying out the final adjustments required without its long-time leather industry partner Lanxess.

Xeros claims its system, which works in industrial laundry applications, can make it possible for tanners to produce leather using 50% of the water they have needed up till now. Lanxess agreed a joint development programme with Xeros in April 2015.

However, when Xeros made its most recent announcement about being close to a deal with Wollsdorf on January 19, it made no mention of its work with Lanxess.

The leather chemicals manufacturer has said it worked with Xeros to introduce the polymer bead technology to Wollsdorf, with the aim of securing a feasibility proof of the technology. “This part of the project has been successfully completed,” Lanxess said in a statement to leatherbiz. “The next project phase focuses on engineering details to implement this technology in a day-to-day operation. As this is mainly engineering work there is no further input needed from a chemical company at this point of time.”

Lanxess said its future role in bringing the polymer bead technology to the leather industry will be decided at a later date.
