Australia targets more sustainable beef industry

19/01/2017
Australia’s Red Meat Advisory Council (RMAC) has released the first draft of a framework designed to ensure the sustainability of the country’s beef industry.

The Australian Beef Sustainability Framework was developed by the RMAC’s Sustainability Steering Group (SSG) after wide-ranging consultation with industry figures.

Its aim is to allow the beef industry to better measure its performance against a variety of sustainability measures and to improve communication of that performance to the wider community. It consists of 31 separate indicators, across four distinct categories: environmental stewardship, economic resilience, people & the community, and animal welfare.

The draft document was made available via an online platform on January 11. Members of the industry, as well as the public, can give their feedback until February 17, with the launch of the final document scheduled for March. This will be subject to continual review and adjustment in response to any sustainable issues that arise in the future.
