Colombian leather company Cueros Vélez has invested $18 million in a new tannery in Amagá in  the north of the country.

Cueros Vélez has long been ambitious. It said in 2012 that it was embarking on an expansion its network of own-brand stores selling its bags, belts, shoes and other products. It said it was aiming to have more than 300 stores inside and outside Colombia by the end of 2015.

It now talks of having a total of nearer 250 stores, but it has launched a new interior design model called Vélez Home. The two newest Vélez Home stores will open in Bogotá and Barranquilla before Christmas.

The company has said its expansion programme will create 3,000 new jobs directly and 2,500 indirectly.
