Leather Pipeline points out “uncertainties” affecting three leather-producing countries
Leatherbiz Weekly’s exclusive market intelligence report, Leather Pipeline, has said “uncertainties” in different parts of the world are holding the industry back from the levels of activity it normally experiences at this busy time of year.

According to the report, which can be read in full in our Market Info section, the questioning that continues following the US presidential election is not part of this. It names three other countries where production is flowing less smoothly than most in the industry might have hoped: Italy, India and China.

In Italy in China, the difficulties centre on environmental controls, with concerns over the effluent treatment plant that serves the Arzignano tanning cluster in northern Italy and a new round of government-imposed closures in Hebei province the specific issues the report points to.

In India, the concern is over the withdrawal by the government of higher-denomination bank notes. Leather Pipeline says workers are having to spend so long queuing at banks to change money that production time is down by between 20% and 40%.
