Indonesian tanners call for action on raw hide exports

21/11/2016
Chairman of the Indonesian Tanners Association (APKI), Haryono Sutanto, has said the country’s government should increase the export duty on raw hides and semi-finished leather to make it easier for APKI members to source local raw material at a fair price. Current export duties are around 15% but APKI has made it clear that not all shipments of raw or semi-finished hides and skins are leaving hte country legally.

Mr Sutanto, who is the managing director of the PT Budi Makmur tannery in Yogyakarta, said in recent comments to local media that the Indonesian tanning sector is currently working at only 40% capacity,  producing an annual total of around 75 million square-feet of finished boving leather and 100 million square-feet of finished goat leather.
