Emissions scandal hurts VW, but not in China

Volkswagen agreed a settlement of $14.7 billion in a US court on October 25 to compensate car buyers in the US whom it misled over the emissions performance of its cars. The company described the development as “an important milestone in our journey towards making things right in the United States”.
In the first ten months of 2016, sales of Volkswagen vehicles in the US declined by 6.4% compared to the same period in 2015 (the false emissions claims came to light in September 2015). Sales went down from 505,900 vehicles in those ten months in 2015 to 473,400 in 2016.
However, on releasing its figures for the January-October period, Volkswagen revealed that sales in China went up by 11.3% year on year, from just under 2.9 million in the first ten months of 2015 to more than 3.2 million in the same months in 2016.
