Australian concerns over buffalo taking market share in Indonesia

02/11/2016
Livestock industry representatives in Australia’s Northern Territory have said Indonesian imports of frozen buffalo meat from India pose a real threat to Australia’s share of the Indonesian meat market. Moreover, other important importers of Australian beef and live cattle, Vietnam and Malaysia, are also beginning to bring in buffalo as a cheaper alternative.

Indonesian media have said the imported Indian buffalo meat is beginning to win over the Indonesian public, especially consumers on lower incomes (buffalo is selling in markets for a little over half the price of beef).
