Leather Pipeline: tanners in Asia need to move fast to secure raw material
01/11/2016
According to the report, which can be read in full in our Market Info section, tanners who were reticent about stocking up on raw material earlier in the autumn are now under time pressure. It says hides from Europe and North America may now take as much as eight weeks to reach Asia owing to constraints on capacity at shipping companies.
The next Chinese New Year is January 28, with most production facilities closing well in advance of the holiday. The Leather Pipeline report says that, with tanners needing new stocks of raw material to clear customs, reach their facilities and be processed at least to wet blue stage before the shut-down, hides will need to be on the ocean by mid-November.
