Closed Brazilian tannery could reopen

The management team at a tannery in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul in Brazil has said it is preparing to reopen the facility, with the business likely to start production again in February 2017.

In August 2014, the tannery in question, Curtume de Três Lagoas, closed after the authorities in Mato Grosso do Sul issued it with a substantial fine for contravening environmental norms.

At that time it employed 120 people, but the company that owns the tannery was able to keep on only 13 of these workers to carry out maintenance of the equipment and of the site, which is 30 kilometres outside the city of Três Lagoas.

One of the directors, Claudemir Rocha Meidas, has told a local newspaper that, provided the business environment picks up, the tannery will start recruiting again in the new year with a view to acquiring a first batch of raw hides in February and starting production.
