New PTA chairman spells out priorities

Mr Zafar said on taking up the position that he will aim to address issues such as the recent decline in leather-sector exports. Pakistan’s exports of leather and finished products made from leather fell by 18.3% in the 2015-2016 financial year (July 2015-June 2016). Tanners and other manufacturers in the sector brought in just under $1.2 billion in export revenues over the 12-month period.
According to the new PTA chairman, one of the reasons his member companies have registered weaker export revenues is that the rising cost of doing business in Pakistan has made them less competitive.
He said he would lobby the government in Islamabad to waive the 3% duty in place at the moment on imported hides and skins, and to increase Pakistan’s own livestock population.
