US tannery to cease production

A tannery in Pennsylvania is to cease production in October after more than 30 years in the business.

Philadelphia-based Regal International Leathers began the process of selling its machinery through a local auction house, Comly, at the end of September, saying potential buyers were welcome to visit the tannery on September 30 to view the equipment. Potential buyers have until October 6 to register; all bids must be submitted online.

Machinery available in the sale includes a Flamar Italia buffing machine, a Poletto setting out machine, a Bergi OFB Kombipress embossing machine, spray booths, milling drums and more.

Run by Martha and Alex Doulos, Regal launched in 1985. Mr Doulos comes from a tanning family in Europe and studied leather chemistry at the University of Leeds, working in tanneries in the UK and Germany during holidays.

Regal developed a proprietary method for making veg-tanned leather with a soft grain and the facility to develop a patina over time. It also specialised in flame-resistant leather with a glove-soft hand.
