Weak start to new fiscal year for Pakistan’s leather exports

In the first two months of its current financial year, July and August 2016, Pakistan registered ongoing declines in the volume and value of its leather-sector exports.

Over the two months this year, the sector’s total exports had a value of $158.5 million compared to $176.4 million in the corresponding months last year, a decline of 10.1%.

During July and August in 2016, tanners exported 1.9 million square-metres of tanned leather from Pakistan, with a value of $56.7 million, compared to a volume of 2.9 million square-metres and a value of $63.4 million in the same months last year.

This represents a drop of almost 35% in volume and of 10.5% in value.

The country also exported 1.9 million pairs of shoes with a value of $19.7 million in July – August 2016, compared to 1.7 million pairs with a value of  $20.3 million in the corresponding months last year, which means that the volume went up by 10.9%, but the value fell by 3.2%.
