Beef holds its own as Uruguay tops OECD table again
22/09/2016
Uruguay came top of the beef-consumption ranking last year with a per capita consumption of close to 46.4 kilos, up by 5% on the figure for 2014. Argentina took second place, with its citizens eating, on average, 40.4 kilos of beef each last year, level with the figure for 2014.
Paraguay came next in the OECD table with consumption of 25.6 kilos, up by almost 25% year on year, followed by the US, where beef consumption fell only slightly (0.4%) to 24.7 kilos per person.
By way of comparison, consumption in the European Union was much lower at almost 10.8 kilos per person per year, but contrary to frequent suggestions that Europeans are eating less beef, the 2015 figure represents a year-on-year rise in consumption of 1.4%.
Chinese consumption is lower again at 3.8 kilos per person, but was up by 2.7% compared to the figure for 2014.
