US hide exports up by 10% in volume, but revenues continue to fall

The most recent figures for US hide exports show that the trend of increasing volume compared to last year but decreasing value.

Between January and July, US packers and traders shipped 11.9 million fresh or wet salted hides to overseas tanners, a year-on-year increase of 10%. However, the value of exported hides over the seven-month period in 2016 was $762.6 million, a fall compared to the same months last year of 17%. The figures from the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA).

With regard to wet blue, tanners in the US shipped a total of 3.9 million hides in the first seven months of this year, 12% fewer than in the same months last year. These wet blue hides brought in export earnings of just under $360 million, 25% down on the figure for the same period in 2015.
