Leather Pipeline: are there more hides than tanners can use?

With slaughter rates already around 10% higher than a year ago in the US, more hides coming out of Brazilian abattoirs and rates about to increase in Europe too, the report, which is part of the September 20 issue of Leatherbiz Weekly, suggests that tanners may have little need for extra raw material at the moment.
“Without a rebound for leather as a material we doubt that the raw material being produced at present will all be needed to cover the demand for finished leather,” the report says.
It points out that this is already the case for splits and sheepskins, where supply cannot be absorbed and material is being either stored or destroyed. “We do not consider this as a simple seasonal or momentary situation,” the Leather Pipeline report says, “and consequently it requires a general change and greater consumption of leather to restore balance.”
