Xeros reveals identity of pioneering tannery involved in polymer bead trials

Xeros Technology Group, which aims to use its patented polymer bead systems to help tanners reduce the volume of water and consume they consume during leather production, has published its results for the first half of 2016.

The company, which already uses its polymer bead technology in the commercial laundry business, reported an increase in revenues of almost 150%, reaching £807,000 over the six-month period. It said it had made good progress in a number of application areas, including leather, and created “considerable interest” among industry leaders.

With regard to leather in particular, Xeros said on announcing the results that it has now completed six successful trials with a leading European tanner, and that these trials have confirmed “significant savings” in the consumption of water and chemicals, as well as lower volumes of effluent for tanners to manage after production.

At the time of the announcement, chief executive, Mark Nichols, said: “It’s now clear that we have a disruptive bead technology platform that can be commercialised across a range of global industries. The pace of our leather processing trials has accelerated ahead of our own expectations and we aim to achieve large-scale commercialisation by the end of 2018.”

Xeros announced a partnership with leather chemicals manufacturer Lanxess in April 2015 and it has worked with Lanxess throughout the leather trial process.

At the time of announcing the half-year results, the company revealed for the first time that the tannery it and Lanxess have been working with is specialist Austrian supplier of automotive and aviation leather, Wollsdorf Leather. Wollsdorf won the global Tannery of the Year award in 2014.
