Murcia mulls over new leather and footwear cluster

14/09/2016
The Spanish region of Murcia is to conduct a review of local leather and footwear producers and has said it may seek to reorganise companies into a genuine cluster.

A statement from the regional government said it believes a cluster set-up will encourage synergies and collaboration among different companies in the sector. Its intention is to include sports clothing, workwear and even bridal wear companies in the group, with the total number of companies involved standing at more than 500.

Most of these companies are small, however, and the average workforce size is only nine people; 70% of the companies involved have fewer than five employees and a further 15% have between five and ten.

Murcia’s regional government calculated the value of these companies’ output at €112 million in 2014.

Eleven footwear companies from Murcia took part in the September 2016 edition of Momad Shoes in Madrid. Most were from the area around the town Caravaca de la Cruz, 75 kilometres from the regional capital, the city of Murcia. Government sources have suggested Caravaca could be the idea place to set up the region’s new leather, footwear and clothing cluster.
