Better-quality hides in demand in China, Leather Pipeline says
Our exclusive Leather Pipeline market intelligence report, published each fortnight in the Leatherbiz Weekly newsletter, says most discussions at the 2016 All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai centred on the state of the industry in the host country.

According to the report, there was an increased interest among important Chinese tanners in importing higher-quality raw material. The obvious reason for this is an interest among China’s best leather producers in moving up the value chain to produce more expensive finished leather.

As a corollary, however, the Leather Pipeline report, which subscribers can read in full here, says that tanners who continue to focus on producing lower-value leather for the mass market face ongoing challenges. They are likely to continue to lose market share to synthetic materials and are also likely to struggle to keep up with demands from the Chinese government to improve environmental management.
