“Steady growth” for Chinese leather industry

31/08/2016
The Chinese leather industry maintained steady growth in the first half of 2016, according to Su Chaoying, Honorary Chairman of the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA). He was speaking at the opening of the All China Leather Exhibition in Shanghai (August 31-September 2).

Mr Su said China is going into a “transition period”, as the country’s economy shifts from export-led, investment-fuelled growth to innovation and consumption-driven growth. This has meant “new challenges” for China’s leather industry.

He added that China has recognised “the key role of mass entrepreneurship and innovation for its future growth”.

Addressing the leather industry directly, he had a positive message. He said many companies had already invested heavily in innovation, with many more preparing to do so. This investment includes upgrading technology and machinery, exploring how to reduce industrial pollution and producing higher value-added products.
