Leather Pipeline report says leather is no longer “needed”
09/08/2016
The report, which subscribers can read in full at this link to the Market Info section of the website, says that demand for high-quality leather in high-quality products remains strong. “Not even the vegan trend, which has reached high-net-worth women, has triggered any major decline in the demand for luxury bags, premium cars or designer sofas,” it contends.
Beyond that, however, it says: “It is no longer the case that leather is needed to serve the global consumer. There are enough alternatives at very reasonable prices to avoid leather.” It goes on to say that as long as cotton and oil remain within their current price ranges, any improvement in the situation seems unlikely.
Finished product manufacturers and retailers have said they welcome having what they describe as easier and cheaper manufacturing, easier quality controls, quicker and faster adjustments to changes in production and eveb lower product rejection rates as factors that make leather alternatives much more attractive.
