Cow protection scandals force Gujarat premier to resign

04/08/2016
Violence against people involved in trading cattle has prompted the resignation of the premier of the Indian state of Gujarat, Anandiben Patel.

Ms Patel became the chief minister of Gujarat in 2014, with commentators saying she was hand-picked for the role by prime minister, Narendra Modi (whose home state is Gujarat).

A policy promoted by Mr Modi’s party has led to stricter controls on cattle-trading and beef and leather production in some parts of India. In Gujarat, this has led to violence against people involved in trading cattle, usually people who are Muslim or lower-caste Hindus. Representatives of the Dalit caste in particular have held mass protests against their treatment. With anger growing, Ms Patel announced her resignation.
