Academic honour for popular industry figure
The assistant commercial director at research and testing body SATRA, Christine Powley-Williams has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Northampton in recognition of her years of service to the leather industry.

Dr Powley-Williams’ career in the leather industry spans her entire working life. After studying leather science in her native Northampton, she spent her first five years at a local operation, Carr Tanning. Seeking new horizons, she went to work for specialist kangaroo leather producer, Packer Leather, in Queensland, Australia, in 1990.

On her return to the UK, she joined the BLC Leather Technology Centre, becoming its innovation and training manager. With friend and colleague Amanda Michel, she founded a specialist training consultancy called Leather Wise in 2005 and worked there, delivering detailed training in all aspects of leather production and leather use to clients from a wide range of finished product brands and retail groups.

She left Leather Wise in 2009 to join SATRA, first as the manager of its consumer products division before being promoted to her current position exactly three years ago. She is an active member of a number of industry bodies and is a regular speaker at industry events around the world.

World Leather congratulates Dr Powley-Williams on receiving this well deserved honour.
