Wet blue decline brings US hide export revenues down

Official figures from the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association show that in the first five months of this year, tanners and traders there exported 11.2 million hides. The figure for fresh and wet salted hides was 8.4 million and that for wet blue was 2.8 million.

Compared to the same months in 2015, the volume of fresh and wet salted hides was up by 7.7%, but exports of wet blue were down by 17.6%. Overall, though, the figures for January-May 2016 were flat compared to the same period last year.

In terms of value, export revenues for the first five months of this year were $803.2 million. This represents a decline of 23.3%.
