Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE) has published data for 2015 that puts Catalonia in a clear lead over all other regions in terms of manufacturing performance.

Last year, manufactured goods generated sales of €362.2 billion for Spanish companies, with Catalonia contributing 23.1% of the total. Andalusia was the second-most productive region, with 11.2% of the total, while Valencia came third with 10.7%.

One point of interest was that leather and footwear production contributed 45.3% of sales of manufactured goods in Valencia, demonstrating the importance of the leather and footwear sector to the economy in that part of Spain.

The value of the region’s manufacturing output in 2015 was just under €39 billion. This puts the value of Valencia’s leather and footwear output for the year at €17.7 billion. Valencia is Spain’s most important footwear-producing region.

INE’s figures do not take into account tourism revenues, but they do include fruit, vegetables, wine, textiles and other major industries in Valencia. Leather and footwear dwarf them all.
