Beef and tanning group will pay more for Paraguay’s Braford cattle

Paraguayan packer and tanning group Frigorífico Concepción has entered into a new agreement with livestock farmers across the South American country to pay them a premium for Braford cattle.

A cross between Hereford bulls and Brahman cows, the Braford has a reputation for having high levels of resistance to insects and to heat.

Frigorífico Concepción has signed a new agreement with the Paraguayan Association of Braford Breeders (APCB) to pay a premium of up to 4% for Braford cattle; the company believes it can achieve better margins on the meat and on the hides and has said it already has interest from export markets such as Ecuador and Chile.

The company opened its own wet blue tannery in 2012.

Livestock farmers in Paraguay said earlier this year that stock levels of Braford cattle across the country are currently growing at around 20% per year.
