Istanbul tanners are giving up

Reports from Turkey suggest more and more tanners in the special Istanbul leather industrial zone are giving up. Labour and environmental management costs are going up and indications are that tanners achieving a margin of between 10% and 20% are doing well.

In the face of these challenges, an estimated 30 tanneries in the Istanbul leather zone have ceased production in the last five years with some of them claiming that they are able to make more money by letting out their factories to other companies than from making leather. There are now companies in the industrial units in the leather industry zone making pharmaceuticals and other products.

The Istanbul leather industrial zone was established in 1982.It has 386 industrial plots on a site that covers 7.5 million square-metres of land.
