Leather Pipeline: China’s dominance is on the wane
The peak period of Chinese domination in leather production has been fading since 2015, according to World Leather’s exclusive Leather Pipeline report.

The report, published as part of the Leatherbiz Weekly electronic newsletter, claims that raw material export figures and production data show that Chinese leather production is shrinking, and has been since last year.

It says this is partly because of falling demand for Chinese-made goods, including in China’s domestic market, but adds that another contributing factor is that some production has moved away from China to other countries.

“China as a manufacturing hub for shoe manufacture is becoming less and less attractive,” the report concludes.
