China promises “new chapter” for trade with Uzbekistan
23/06/2016
President Xi said Uzbekistan will have an important role to play in establishing the new Silk Road Economic Belt, an idea he first proposed in 2013 to give China new rail-based logistics routes to Europe.
Chinese investment is already making an impact on economic development in many parts of central Asia, including Uzbekistan, and leather is one of the industries to benefit. Leather and footwear production is already taking place at the Pengsheng Industrial Park, 70 kilometres from the capital, Tashkent.
Connections are already improving, for example with the opening earlier this year of central Asia’s longest railway tunnel, the Kamchiq Tunnel, built by Chinese engineers.
