US hide export volumes pick up, but value continues to drop
Exports of hides from the US have picked up in volume but have continued to fall sharply in value, emphasising the difference in raw material prices in 2016 compared to a year ago.

The most recent figures released by the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association cover the first four months of 2016. Compared to the same period last year, US hide exports increased by 1.1% in volume but decreased by more than 30% in value.

Over the four month period in 2016, tanners and traders exported just over 8.8 million hides from the US, bringing in export revenues of $626.2 million. The corresponding figures for January-April 2015 were 8.7 million in volume and $821.1 million in value.

Shipments of wet blue contributed 25% of the volume of total shipments in the first four months of this year, but accounted for 32.4% of the total value of hide exports.
