Lanxess biocidal product takes a big step towards EU authorisation
The European Chemicals Agencies (ECHA) has confirmed the registration of a biocidal product from Lanxess, Chlorocresol, for use in leather manufacture. “With this decision, Chlorocresol is the first of the big biocidal actives used in leather processing that has successfully completed this crucial step,” Lanxess said on announcing the development.

A further step, formal authorisation, should follow.

European biocidal product regulations govern the use of biocidal products in the European Union (EU) and the import and sale of any articles that have been treated with a biocidal product. Treated articles, including leather accessories and shoes, may only be imported or sold in the EU if the active substance used for biocidal treatment is registered correctly and biocidal products may only be used in the EU if authorisation has been granted to the supplier.

Authorisation is given for a specific formulation and the supplier must stick to that formulation.

The ECHA decision means Chlorocresol is safe for workers, consumers and the environment in a dosing of 1200 mg/kg of active substance and its use and presence in leather articles is legally compliant in the EU. Lanxess said the product’s use at this level “still shows a substantial margin of safety”.

Chlorocresol is one of the central active ingredients in the Lanxess Preventol Rrange for use in leather processing.
