Poor April figures for Mexico’s leather industry

16/06/2016
Mexico’s manufacturing output fell slightly in the month of April, showing a year-on-year dip of 0.9%.

However, the decline for the leather sector was considerably sharper, registering 8.3%. Observers of the Mexican economy also expressed concern at a 9.1% downturn in the country’s automotive sector.

An analyst at Banorte Ixe, Alejandro Cervantes, has told local media that weak demand in the US is the most likely reason for these figures. He said, though, that he believes there could be a recovery in the coming months, largely because currency exchange rates make imports from Mexico attractive at the moment.
