Usak nappa tanners turn to Italy

07/06/2016
Tanners in Turkey who have traditionally supplied nappa leather to the garment sector have, as is well documented, experienced a downturn in their fortunes since trade between Turkey and Russia dwindled.

Now tanners in the Usak tanning cluster in western Turkey believe they have found a viable alternative market. Local reports say several tanners in Usak have started shipping chrome-tanned, chrome-free and fully vegetable-tanned sheepskin processed to crust stage to tanners in Italy.

Italian tanners are using the semi-processed material to make garment nappa, as well as finished leather for accessories and footwear. The Usak tanners have said they hope this new line of business will bring in revenues of $100 million before the end of 2016.
