Tanners need to reclaim leather’s place in shoes and handbags
While some segments of the global leather industry are flourishing and there is even a shortage of some in-demand raw materials, the use of leather in lower-value, higher-volume products needs a boost. That’s the clear message from the latest issue of the exclusive Leather Pipeline report (May 31) in Leatherbiz Weekly.

According to the report, the longer producers of shoes and handbags go without moving back to leather from synthetic substitutes, the harder it will be for tanners to attract them back as customers.

The report says a spark may come from fashion leaders rediscovering leather, but what is also needed is for the leather sector itself to stand up for the material.
