US hide exports fall in value by more than 20% in Q1

17/05/2016
Combined figures for the first three months of 2016 show that exports of US hides increased in volume, in comparison to the same months in 2015, but reduced in value.

The figures, released by the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA), continue to reflect a fall in industry-wide hide prices in the course of the last year or so.

The figures for January-March 2016 show that tanners and traders in the US exported more than 6.6 million fresh, wet salted and wet blue hides to customers overseas. This compares with a total of almost 6.4 million for the same three months last year, an increase in volume of around 3.5%. Taken in isolation, however, the figures for wet blue exports from the US indicate a fall of 13% year on year.

In terms of value, the figure for the first three months of 2016 is $467.9 million, compared to a figure for the same period last year of more than $600 million. This represents a fall in value of 22.8%.
