Xeros completes tannery trial of polymer bead technology
16/05/2016
The trial was part of a multi-phase joint development agreement with leather chemicals manufacturer Lanxess. The two partners have not named the leather manufacturer that took part in the trial, saying only that it was “a leading independent tannery”. The trial concentrated only on retanning and dyeing.
When Xeros technology was applied to this phase of the process, the water used and the effluent generated were reduced by over 50%, the technology provider said, adding that the finished leather produced was judged to be “of excellent quality in terms of look, feel, and handle”.
Xeros has said it will carry out further trials to determine the maximum potential of its technology in this field. Chief executive, Mark Nichols, commented: “This is an important development which hails a step-change in the sustainability of the leather processing industry.”
