The organisers of the Leatherworld Middle East exhibition in Dubai said at the start of the 2016 event that the leather sector in the Middle East and North Africa had a value of $4.6 billion in 2015.

Quoting analyst firm Euromonitor, organiser, Messe Frankfurt, said at the opening on April 26 that the figure includes trade in the region of hides, skins and finished leather, as well as finished products. It also said that more than a quarter of the total, trade with a value of $1.2 billion, had come from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Sales of luxury leathergoods in the UAE grew by 14% last year to reach more than $400 million. Analysts have said they expect this figure to double by 2020.
