February US hide figures confirm volumes up, values down

As in the first month of the year, combined figures for January and February 2016 combined show that exports of US hides increased in volume, in comparison to the same months in 2015, but reduced in value.

The figures, released by the US Hide, Skin and Leather Association (USHSLA), continue to reflect a fall in industry-wide hide prices in the course of the last year or so.

The figures for January and February 2016 show that tanners and traders in the US exported just over 4.3 million fresh, wet salted and wet blue hides to customers overseas, bringing in revenue of $304.8 million.

These numbers represent an increase in volume of hides exported of 16.2%. However, in terms of value, the figure for the first two months of 2016 is 13.8% lower than that for the same months in 2015 ($353.5 million).
