Couro Azul to supply leather for TAP’s launch of the A330neo

Portuguese tannery Couro Azul is to supply leather for upholstery for the seating on 14 new Airbus A330neo aircraft that national carrier TAP will incorporate into its fleet towards the end of 2017.

Specialist fitting company Alma Design has worked with TAP on the project and said it wanted passengers to be comfortable, to feel at home and for the planes to have “a touch of Portugal” in the interior. Business class seats will use leather from Alcanena-based Couro Azul, part of the Carvalhos Group of tanneries, to achieve this.

Announcing the development at the Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg, a member of the tanning group’s senior management team, Nuno Carvalho, pointed out that the TAP contract will not be Couro Azul’s first venture into aircraft leather. Its interest in leather for aviation interiors began ten years ago and projects it has been involved in include an initiative in which Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer commissioned an all-Portuguese group of suppliers to design a new, sustainable aircraft interior.

This year in Hamburg, Nuno Carvalho said the TAP deal could open important doors for the Couro Azul, especially as TAP will be the “launch customer” for the A330neo, meaning the layout it uses inside will attract high levels of attention.
