USDA makes change to Margin Protection Programme

USDA will allow dairy farmers participating in the Margin Protection Programme to increase their dairy operations production history if an eligible family member joins the business.

"This change not only helps to strengthen a family dairy operation, it also helps new dairy farmers get started in the family business, while ensuring that safety net coverage remains available for these growing farms," said US Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.

The programme was established in 2014 in order to give dairy producers a safety-net should the margin fall below an agreed level. This would trigger payments to the producer to guard against devastatingly low margins.

“By strengthening the farm safety net, expanding credit options and growing domestic and foreign markets, USDA is committed to helping American farming operations remain successful," Mr Vilsack added.
