Tyson sets water-saving target

In a statement the company made at the time of publishing the third instalment of its 2015 Sustainability Report at the start of April, its vice-president for sustainable food production, Dr Christine Daugherty, said: “We’re setting a 12% water reduction goal by the end of 2020 for our direct operations and will talk with our supply chain, such as the independent farmers, about additional efforts they can make to conserve water. Water is a precious, finite resource and we need to manage it responsibly from farm to finished product.”
Tyson will install continuous monitoring equipment at its US locations to enable personnel to manage water-use in real time. In trials, it said that when managers had real-time insight into how water was being used they were quickly able to improve conservation.
The company slaughters an average of 128,000 head of cattle per week.
Tyson has confirmed to leatherbiz that 12% water-reduction target also applies to all six hide-processing plants that the company runs in different US locations. Its tanneries are in: Dakota City, Nebraska; Amarillo, Texas; Holcomb, Kansas; Joslin, Illinois; Lexington, Nebraska; and Pasco, Washington.
