Dutch leather industry makes CSR self-assessment tool available to all

04/04/2016
Representatives of the Dutch leather industry and Utrecht-based non-profit organisation MVO Nederland combined to launch a new self-assessment tool for tanneries at the end of March.

Called ‘Tannery of the Future’, the tool’s focus is on corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Following a presentation of the idea in Hong Kong on March 31 during the APLF exhibition by Egbert Dikkers, head of sustainability at leather chemicals manufacturer Smit & zoon, ‘Tannery of the Future’ is now freely available for tanners all over the world to use, free of charge.

There is a new dedicated website at www.tanneryofthefuture.org. The group behind it said it has noticed a rising demand in Western markets for high-quality leather products made in conditions that are good for the environment and for people. They feel this development is pressuring brands, retailers, importers and tanneries to create “a future-proof, socially responsible industry”.
