Chinese tanners increase production

China’s largest tanneries increased their production output in 2015. Tanneries with more than $3 million in turnover, of which China has around 600 in total, produced 600 million square-metres of finished leather in 2015, according to the China Leather Industry Association (CLIA). It said this figure represents a 2.2% increase in volume year on year.

Chinese tanners exported 39,000 tonnes of finished leather in 2015, bringing in export revenues of $600 million. These figures indicate year-on-year increases of 19.1% and 20.2%.

However, CLIA also reported a substantial increase, almost 27%, in exports of semi-finished leather. CLIA president, Su Chaoying, said: “Some tanners are transferring part of their production to Vietnam, but these are mostly Taiwanese-owned companies that have already moved part of their shoe production to Vietnam. Most domestic companies are staying here in China.”
